The programme includes: Basic note recognition (solfège / music theory for the young beginner) Guided listening to real examples of music across all genres, from Classical to Jazz and beyond (including the discovery of world’s greatest and most celebrated composers, and The opportunity to gain experience making music in small ensembles (including with small instruments and singing) Movement and dance activities (including musical games and dancing) By working intensively for 5 days in small groups, a stimulating, enriching and supportive environment is provided to all students. They will be guided and closely monitored by an experienced professional, while learning, discovering and interacting with other children of their own age. The skill of critical listening is absolutely fundamental to the art of performance and music learning, and is generally not guided nor explained to children. Children are also not often exposed to the vast variety of musical instruments, genres and combinations that exist. The ensemble work that will be undertaken will allow students to discover the sheer joy of music making in groups from 2 to 10. These courses are specifically designed to either compliment individual private lessons in music, or, for the younger students, to prepare pre-school aged children for future musical tuition. Children are left with a deepened understanding of music, and a fresh and enthusiastic approach to their own regular musical work. Most importantly, through cementing a solid understanding of the basic essentials of music, and through opening their minds to the infinite possibilities of music making, children will be inspired to continue working with and discovering music in their everyday lives. ABOUT TUITION OVERVIEW PIANO LESSONS THEORY LESSONS & EXTERNAL THEORY EXAMINATIONS THE ANNUAL CONCERT PRIVATE ACHIEVEMENT RECITALS THE ANNUAL SCALES & SIGHT-READING EXAM MUSICAL EXCURSIONS TECHNIQUE REHABILITATION AP MUSIC PREPARATION WORKSHOPS OVERVIEW Bonnie Brown runs her established bilingual French-English music school in Paris. Lessons are held in person in Paris, 3ème and also online for students unable to be physically present. She has had the pleasure of working with students from Paris' most prominent private schools, as well as with the students in the public eye and children of public figures requiring an additional level of discretion. To ensure the most complete musical education for students, every school year is punctuated with key events that serve both as a constant motivation to maintain regular practice as well as providing essential musical experiences. Students are goal-oriented, encouraged by the joy of seeing their improvement first-hand, and progress through self-motivation and the desire for excellence. In addition to weekly private tuition, all students are invited to participate in the events below, which aim to foster a feeling of musical community and mutual respect amongst the pupils. None of the additional events below are compulsory, rather they are on offer to those who wish to participate. Overview PIANO LESSONS Owing to her commitments as a concert artist, Bonnie has a limited number of hours that she can devote to teaching. Students who cannot be accommodated at the time of enquiry can be added to a waiting list for an available time after an initial consultation and trial lesson. Lesson length depends on each student's individual age and level, but generally ranges between 30 minutes (small children) and 90 minutes (intermediate to advanced level students) weekly. A regular weekly lesson will include tuition in repertoire, technical work, sight-reading, music history and listening exercises. Unless the student has a strong music theory background, theory is also incorporated into almost every class (for more information on theory tuition please see here ). A precise practice schedule is provided to students at the conclusion of each class, often with the aid of personalised videos and recordings to ensure efficient and enjoyable work at home. Compulsory lesson dates for all students are in accordance with Le calendrier scolaire Zone C (Paris) . Tuition is offered to students willing to commit to regular, weekly lessons (in the case of adult students, fortnightly lessons). All students are required to meet all compulsory lesson dates at a pre-agreed weekly time. Missed lessons by the student are the responsibility of the student and will not be rescheduled, replaced or refunded. Three trial lessons are mandatory for all students at the start of tuition. After these three lessons, if the teacher and student wish to continue, enrolment is automatically for the entire school year. Students may commence lessons at any time during the school year depending on availability. Fees will be calculated at the time of commencement. Although not compulsory, students are most welcome to take lessons during holiday periods depending on Bonnie's availability. Piano Lessons THEORY LESSONS & EXTERNAL THEORY EXAMINATIONS Theory tuition is organised the same way as piano tuition and most often in incorporated into the weekly piano lesson. In some exceptional cases, students are accepted exclusively for theory tuition. All students are encouraged to prepare for and undertake the ABRSM (Associate Board of the Royal Schools of Music) music theory exams to consolidate their understanding of this essential aspect of music education. Since 2011, Bonnie's students have been systematically awarded outstanding results across all grades, with nearly 20% of students awarded a perfect score of 100%. In addition to being an essential element to a well-rounded musical education, ABRSM theory results are internationally recognised and make a valuable addition to college and university applications. Students are encouraged to participate in the Theory Workshops , a fun, social theory-intensive weekend that thoroughly prepares the candidates for their exams. Theory Lessons THE ANNUAL CONCERT The largest annual event where all students perform at least one solo work from memory and additionally come together to perform 4-hands and chamber music (either prepared in workshops or individually during lessons). Since 2009 Bonnie has hired venues in Paris to facilitate the crowds of over 100 people who come to support the students. As a concert artist herself she is a strong advocate of the importance of performance practice for young musicians. The American Church in Paris 75007, location of the Annual Concert The Annual Concert PRIVATE ACHIEVEMENT RECITALS Goal-orientated, these smaller concerts are tailored to individual students to motivate and celebrate different achievements (for instance, recitals of an entire volume of student pieces, themed recitals, recitals to celebrate special events etc.). Most students will participate in a personalised event for their friends, family and other students within the first 2 years of tuition. The Dutch Embassy, Paris, splendid location of a private student recital Private Achievement Recitals THE ANNUAL SCALES & SIGHT-READING EXAM Run every school year, this is an internally organised exam where each student prepares an individually tailored programme of scales, technical work and sight-reading at their own level. Scales & Sight-Reading Exam MUSICAL EXCURSIONS Taking advantage of the rich cultural life on offer in Paris, student excursions to live performances are proposed several times per school year. Friendly challenges and competitions are also organised to motivate students to strive even higher, with a concert outing as the prize. As a concert pianist herself, Bonnie is delighted to be able to invite her students to her public performances. - Masterclasses | Bonnie Brown Pianist
MASTERCLASSES Bonnie Brown is regularly invited to give masterclasses across universities and private schools in Australia, France and internationally, in both English and French. Subjects range from solo performance practices, exam and concert programming, exam, competition and audition preparation and success, chamber music coaching for piano duos and small ensembles, and successfully applying for grants and scholarships to fund further studies. To enquire about her travel schedule and book a masterclass at your institution or music school please use the contact form . MASTERCLASS IN EXAM SUCCESS This masterclass is designed for students at the end of the high schooling and in the first years of university level music studies, with a specific focus on piano students, but is also adaptable to all young musicians at this crucial stage of their musical education and development. The Masterclass is divided into two parts: a lecture on pertinent topics (see below), and performances, where students present works for discussion and critique. During the lecture portion, the following topics are covered: Programme selection : Exam success begins here. How to select not only a balanced programme but how to distinguish yourself with thoughtful, original, artistic and coherent musical choices. The learning period : Ensuring a solid performance all begins in the earliest stages of learning a piece of music, literally from the first time a musician plays the first note. How to avoid common mistakes during this crucial stage and save time, how to manage practice time efficiently, productively and enjoyably, and a timeline for preparation to ensure exam success. Performance Practice: Once the programme is learned, how to psychologically, physically and emotionally prepare for the performance. The stages of preparation in the weeks leading to the performance - how many practice performances, where, when, and what to focus on during this crucial period. The big day - Exam Performance Techniques: Although managing performance stress is 95% in the preparation, on-the-spot stress and nerve management techniques are essential to keeping cool and delivering the best performance under pressure. Drawing on over 30 years of performance experience Bonnie brown shares hints, tips and real techniques to manage the on-the-day nerves associated with performance and to improve stage presence. During the performance portion of the masterclasses students present works and are encouraged and assisted in order to improve not only their musical interpretations but also their stage and performance presence. MASTERCLASS IN CHAMBER MUSIC (SMALL ENSEMBLES WITH PIANO / PIANO DUO & DUET) As a member of a professional piano duo for the last 11 years Bonnie Brown is passionate about chamber music and especially piano duo and duet. This masterclass focuses on established ensembles who present works for critique. Besides a traditional critique in performance aimed to immediately improve the performances , subjects covered can include intelligent repertoire choice, rehearsal techniques, and how to prepare for the unexpected (essential in all good chamber music performance preparations!).

The programme includes: - the discovery of world’s greatest and most celebrated composers, through listening and music appreciation - basic note recognition (solfège / music theory for the young beginner) - the opportunity to gain experience making music in small ensembles. - movement and dance activities By working intensively for 5 days in small groups, a stimulating, enriching and supportive environment is provided to all students. Music Enrichment workshops are held in Paris, 3ème during school holiday periods, for 3 hours each morning during a 5 day period. For the next Workshop dates, please use the contact form here . Duet Workshops DUET / PIANO 4-HANDS WORKSHOPS Several times per school year weekend intensive workshops are proposed to students with the objective of discovering the joy of making music with others. Young piano students often experience feelings of musical isolation and these workshops aim to combat this right from the earliest stage of piano tuition by studying, rehearsing and ultimately performing with others. The culminating performance on the Sunday afternoon is either for family and friends or, more recently, to an external public (before the Covid19 crisis we were delighted to visit retirement homes as our performance venue). The best duets from these workshops are also ultimately selected for the larger Annual Concert. When students are not rehearsing duets, they are discovering the great performers and composers of musical history as well as working on sight-reading and theory. Workshops encourage a wonderful sense of community, complicity and support amongst the students - the struggles, and the victories, are shared experiences. These workshops are open both to existing students and pupils from other teachers. They are bilingual French-English and held in Paris, 3ème. For dates and information about the next workshop, please use the contact form here . Theory Workshops THEORY WORKSHOPS Organised twice per year directly before the external theory exams, students come together for a weekend intensive in music theory exam preparation. A convivial and amusing way to solidify their knowledge prior to the exams and one that ultimately encourages a feeling of musical community and a supportive environment amongst the students. Students undertake practice exams under exam conditions and learn valuable exam techniques in order to be throughly prepared. Many students remark that this experience is vitally useful in not only preparing for their theory exams, but more globally when preparing for exams later at school.
